Actor Imran Khan Asked to Leave India by October 28 After Mumbai Protest

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, known for films such as Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, has reportedly received a notice directing him to leave India by October 28, 2026. The action followed his participation in a protest held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10.

The development has attracted attention because Khan is reportedly a US citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

The protest called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and was associated with demonstrations concerning electoral issues. Khan was among those who participated in the gathering. Police detained several protesters during the demonstration, including the actor, before releasing them. The protest subsequently became the subject of a complaint concerning the participation of a foreign national in political activity.

According to media reports, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint alleging that Khan's participation in the protest violated the conditions applicable to foreign nationals and OCI cardholders.

The complaint was reportedly forwarded to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), following which authorities issued the notice. The allegations and the legal grounds for the action remain important aspects of the developing case.

OCI status allows eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin to live in India under specified conditions, but it does not grant all the political rights available to Indian citizens. Authorities may examine whether particular activities comply with the rules governing OCI cardholders and foreign nationals. However, receiving a notice does not itself establish that a person has been convicted of an offence or that a court has ruled against them.

The reported notice gives Imran Khan until October 28, 2026, to leave India. The situation could develop further depending on his response, the authorities' position and whether he pursues a legal challenge. Any subsequent decision concerning his immigration status would depend on the applicable law and the details of the official proceedings.

The case has also drawn attention to the relationship between immigration regulations and participation in public demonstrations. While Indian citizens have constitutional rights concerning peaceful assembly and political expression, foreign nationals and OCI cardholders are subject to different legal conditions. Further official statements or court proceedings will help clarify the specific basis for the notice and determine what options may be available to the actor.
