Delhi HC Backs Government's Temporary Telegram Ban

The Delhi High Court has upheld the Central Government's temporary ban on Telegram, stating that the decision was justified in view of concerns surrounding the security of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. The court noted that authorities were required to take preventive measures to protect the integrity of the national-level medical entrance test.

The government had imposed restrictions on Telegram after allegations surfaced that certain channels and groups on the platform were being used to circulate leaked examination material and spread misinformation related to the re-exam. Officials argued that immediate action was necessary to prevent unfair practices and maintain a level playing field for candidates.

During the hearing, the court observed that examination security is a matter of public importance and that authorities have the responsibility to act when there is a credible threat to the fairness of the process. It further stated that the restriction was temporary in nature and aimed at addressing specific concerns linked to the examination period.

The ruling has sparked debate among students, digital rights advocates, and education experts. While some supported the move as a necessary step to curb malpractice, others expressed concerns about restricting access to a widely used communication platform. The government has indicated that the ban will be reviewed once the examination-related concerns are fully addressed.
