Israel Invites Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar for Top Bravery Award

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has invited Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar to Jerusalem to receive Israel’s highest civilian heroism award in recognition of his courage during a mid-air emergency aboard a Flydubai aircraft. In a letter to the captain, Herzog praised his actions and expressed his desire to personally honour him once he has recovered from his injuries. The invitation highlights the international recognition of the Indian pilot’s role in protecting passengers and crew.
The incident took place on September 30, 2026, aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to reports, the aircraft’s co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar inside the cockpit while the plane was in flight. The confrontation created a serious threat to the safety of everyone aboard, prompting an emergency response from the flight crew and passengers.
Despite sustaining injuries, Machchhar played a crucial role in allowing others to intervene and restrain the alleged attacker. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The incident could have had devastating consequences, but the crew and passengers worked together to bring the emergency under control and protect the lives of those on board.
Herzog’s invitation follows Israel’s decision to honour six Israeli passengers who helped restrain the alleged attacker during the incident. They received the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for their actions. Machchhar is expected to receive the recognition in Jerusalem after recovering sufficiently to travel, further highlighting the cooperation and courage displayed by those involved in the emergency.
