Macron Witnesses France’s M51.3 Ballistic Missile Test

French President Emmanuel Macron witnessed the launch of France’s upgraded M51.3 strategic ballistic missile during a major military test on October 6. The launch was conducted from the French nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine Le Vigilant.

The M51.3 was launched from the submarine during the test, which was designed to validate the vessel’s ability to operate the upgraded missile system. The missile did not carry a nuclear warhead, and the test was conducted as part of France’s strategic deterrence programme.

The French Defence Ministry said the missile was tracked throughout its flight before falling into a designated area of the North Atlantic. The test was carried out as part of the submarine’s certification process following maintenance and repair work.

The launch highlights France’s continued efforts to modernise its independent nuclear deterrent. Macron’s presence during the test underscored the strategic importance Paris places on maintaining and upgrading its submarine-based missile capability amid a changing European security environment.
