Rajnath Singh Launches India’s First Fleet Support Ship

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched INS Surya, India’s first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 2026. The launch marks a significant step in strengthening India’s naval support capabilities.
INS Surya is designed to provide essential logistical support to Indian Navy warships during extended deployments. The vessel will be capable of carrying fuel, fresh water, ammunition and other supplies, allowing ships to remain at sea for longer periods without returning to port.
The ship will also support maintenance activities and helicopter operations, further increasing the Navy’s operational endurance. Its induction is expected to strengthen India’s ability to sustain maritime operations across the Indian Ocean Region.
During the event, Rajnath Singh also laid the keel for the fifth Fleet Support Ship and inaugurated upgraded shipbuilding infrastructure at Hindustan Shipyard Limited. The developments underline India’s growing focus on indigenous naval construction and maritime industrial capability.
