Thane Construction Accident: Steel Structure Falls on Moving Car

A major construction accident was reported at Kopri Bridge in Thane, Maharashtra, on October 17, 2026, when a steel reinforcement cage from an under-construction elevated road pier toppled onto a moving car. The incident occurred during work on the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road project, raising concerns about construction safety on the busy route connecting Thane and Mumbai.
The falling steel structure damaged the car’s front windshield and upper portion.
Videos from the scene showed the vehicle trapped beneath the heavy metal framework, while construction workers and traffic personnel arrived to manage the situation. The incident also disrupted traffic on the busy stretch as authorities worked to clear the road.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which oversees the project, stated that no injuries had been reported. Some preliminary media reports had mentioned injuries to the car’s occupants, but the authority’s later statement did not confirm any casualties.
Following the incident, MMRDA imposed a penalty of ₹2 crore on the contractor responsible for the construction work. The authority described the incident as serious and said it would not tolerate lapses in construction safety. The damaged car was removed, and a crane was used to assist in clearing the fallen steel structure.
The Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road is part of Thane’s transport infrastructure development, intended to improve traffic movement along the Eastern Express Highway. However, the accident has renewed questions about safety measures around active construction sites, particularly where heavy machinery and structural components are being handled near moving vehicles.
MMRDA has ordered a detailed investigation to determine why the reinforcement cage collapsed and whether safety procedures were followed. The findings are expected to help establish the cause of the accident and identify any lapses. Until the investigation is completed, the precise circumstances behind the collapse remain unclear.
