Trump Says Atlantic Could Be Called “Trump Ocean”

US President Donald Trump has sparked a fresh debate over geographical names after suggesting that the Atlantic Ocean could be renamed “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas.” Speaking at a rally in Tennessee on October 10, 2026, Trump floated the idea while discussing previous efforts to change the names of geographical features associated with the United States.

During his remarks, Trump referred to the Gulf of America and other naming proposals, suggesting that the country should also have an ocean named after it. His comments attracted attention because renaming a major international geographical feature would involve considerations beyond a presidential statement.

Trump’s suggestion follows his administration’s earlier move to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for US federal government use. That change affected how US federal agencies refer to the gulf, but it did not replace the internationally recognised name everywhere.

As of October 11, there has been no confirmed official decision to rename the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. Trump’s latest comments remain a proposal, and both oceans continue to be known by their established names internationally.
